Plant sale 2007

Seventh Annual Plant Sale

Phew! The seventh edition of the plant sale has come and gone, once again surpassing previous records - in terms of number of plants, customers, and weather. To start with the weather - this felt like the beginning of summer, sunny and very warm, with hardly a breeze (a good thing, with plants sitting out and plant description signs prone to flapping about).

I had so many plants potted up, it took me a good part of a day just to cart them from the back of the yard into the garage. Setting up tables to accommodate them all was a particular challenge this year - but in the end, each of the more than 200 varieties had its own space. My parents, in town for a visit, got drafted to help with pricing. So everything was ready by Saturday morning.

Good thing too - the place was mobbed by 7:45am! Next year, I'll have to borrow the grocery store's deli ticket dispenser - I'm afraid that the quieter, more patient people got passed over at times in the clamor for attention and check-out service! Unsurprisingly, the tables were looking a lot emptier by nine o'clock, and things were just about done by 10:30 or 11. Only a minority of varieties are still represented on the tables - many of those may get donated to the HPS/MAG spring plant sale, two weeks from now.

And with that behind us, our own garden is finally due to get some of the attention it needs and deserves. Stay tuned for updates in my journal...

Next year? Yeah, most likely there will another installment, around the same time of year. I'll first have to grow a bunch of new plants though - because so many of this year's crop have found new homes! If you'd like me to add you to my mailing list to be reminded by email a few weeks before the sale send me an e-mail.

What plants?

We had over 200 different species and varieties - mostly perennials, but also some herbs, shrub and tree saplings, and ornamental grasses. Besides a few first-year perennials, most of them had been with us one or more years.

A few general words about our plants

How much?

Prices range from $1 to $6, depending on type and size of plant.  As a general guideline:

  • $1 for some first-year plants, annuals, and herbs
  • $1.50 for some medium-sized common perennials
  • $2-$3 for larger mature perennials
  • $4-$6 for a few one-of-a-kind varieties

The majority of plants will be priced around $2-$3.

Any discounts?

We're always scrounging around for used pots for our plants. This year, we'll take 10c off your total for each pot (any standard one-quart to one-gallon size nursery pot) that you bring to us, up to 20% of your total amount. Long live recycling!

I can't make it - am I out of luck?

If you can't make it to the sale on Saturday, check back here on Saturday evening or Sunday. If I have lots of leftovers, I'll still be selling some plants on Sunday or during the following week.
